Deserted Scots railway station had no passengers at all in the last year

One of Britain’s most deserted railway stations had no passengers using it at all in the past year.

Beasdale station, on the West Highland Line, is a request stop and recorded no passenger entries or exits between April 2020 and March 2021.

Figures from the Office of Rail and Road (ORR) showed it was one of six UK stations completely deserted during the pandemic – four of which were in Wales.

Passenger numbers were down by 78 per cent during the height of the Covid pandemic – only 388 million journeys were made, just 22.3 per cent of those made in 2019-20 when 1739 million journeys were travelled. This is the lowest level of annual passengers since 1872.

Scotland’s most used station was Glasgow Central, with 5.3 million entries and exits, down from 32.5 million in 2019.

Edinburgh Waverley saw 2.9 million people pass in and out. Glasgow Queen Street was third with 2.3 million.

London’s railway stations were still the most used in the whole country – but Waterloo lost the top spot it has held for 17 years to Stratford, which had about 14 million entries and exits.
