Deserted carriageways with barely a vehicle in sight - what 'rush hour' looked like on Manchester's motorways tonight

This is what 'rush hour' looked like on the motorways of Greater Manchester tonight.

More than a week into the coronavirus lockdown and roads that would usually be heaving with commuters were eerily quiet this tea time.

Photos from Highways Englands' motorway cameras, taken between 5.30pm and 6pm on Tuesday, show almost entirely deserted carriageways on the M60, M62 and M602.

It comes as hundreds of thousands of people in Greater Manchester are now working from home, after the government put a stop to all but essential travel to try to slow the spread of coronavirus.

Ten days ago, before Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced tighter restrictions on movement, photos of the region's motorways captured them appearing to be seemingly quieter than normal, but still filled with traffic.

But today, just a handful of vehicles could be seen near the usually gridlocked Eccles Interchange, while on the M62 at junction 20 for Rochdale, there were only a tiny number of vehicles to be seen shortly before 6pm.

Cameras on the M602 near Salford also captured the moment a solitary lorry passed by near junction two.

It was a similar story on the M60 where the number of vehicles in a still frame captured by a camera near Denton Island could be counted on one hand.

Late last week, police in some areas set up checkpoints on motorways.

Officers in Cheshire set up 'checkpoints' on major routes and stopped drivers to ask why they were out.

Anyone who was found not have a satisfactory reason for being out was 'given strong advice' to return home.
