Desecration of Jesus Christ's statue in Ambala: Accused sent on 6-day police remand

AMBALA: A day after their arrest, two accused Sandeep and Ravinder who committed desecration of the statue of Jesus Christ at historic Holy Redeemer Church in Ambala Cantonment, were taken on six-day police remand by crime investigation agency (CIA)-I of Ambala police on Wednesday.

Haryana: Jesus Christ's statue vandalised outside British-era Holy Redeemer Church in Ambala

In a press statement issued on the day, Ambala police claimed that it took action in the desecration case within 48 hours with the arrests of both the accused.

"Both accused Sandeep and Ravinder were produced in the district court on Wednesday, which granted their six-day police remand to CIA-I", said Ambala police.

The police are yet to "ascertain the motive" behind the desecration of the statue of Jesus Christ and the accused had disclosed to the police that they were drunk when they committed the offence. The police sources said that due to recent disruptions of two Christmas-related events in Gurugram and Kurukshetra by some right-wing groups, there is apprehension that it could be an organised crime.

Ambala superintendent of police (SP) Jashandeep Singh Randhawa in a press conference at his office on Tuesday had said that "they are investigating the crime from every angle."

On December 26, Father Patras Mundu of Holy Redeemer Church had lodged a complaint at Ambala Cantonment police station that two suspects committed desecration of the statue of Jesus Christ.

The police lodged the complaint and on the basis of the CCTV camera footage and some scientific evidence from the crime spot, arrested Sandeep and Ravinder.

The SP had formed a special investigation team of CIA-I, CIA-II and SHO Ambala Cantt headed by ASP Pooja Dabla, to investigate this case.
