Des viewers divided over David Tenant's 'baffling' Aberdonian accent

Viewers tuned into ITV's latest drama Des have been expressing their frustration at David Tennant's attempts at an Aberdonian accent.

David, who is originally from Scotland, transformed into serial killer Dennis Nilsen for the role where he appears on screen mimicking the mop-haired and bespectacled style of the murderer.

While viewers have praised David's look and mannerisms as being eerily similar to Nilsen, some have taken issue with David's portrayal of Nilsen's subtle Doric dialect.

Born in Fraserburgh, Aberdeenshire, Nilsen gained notoriety when he was found guilty of murdering six men in the late 1970s and early 1980s - thought it's believed there were at least twice as many victims.

Viewers watching the dramatisation of Nilsen's court case, were divided over whether Tennant managed to capture his distinct voice.

"Why is it that David Tennant quite often sounds like he's faking a Scottish accent," joked one.

"Watching Des on the tele. David Tennant is a cracking actor, although Nilsen was from Fraserburgh, not Dundee, as his accent would suggest," complained another.

"That's a pants North-East Scotland accent," a third agreed.

While a third teased "David Tennant is hopeless at a Scottish accent. It’s not exactly Billy Connolly is it?"

But many other disagreed with one arguing: "David Tennant has got the Fraserburgh accent down very well. It’s not a really strong one but it’s there.

"Thought Tennant got the accent pretty much spot on. Or at least as good as anyone could," tweeted another in agreement.

"It's genuinely freaking me out just how spot on David Tennant is portraying Dennis Nilsen," complimented a third.

Three part series Des is set to reach a dramatic conclusion tonight.

The trial begins with the defence team ripping into the accounts of the events from key witnesses, sparking concern the seemingly open-and-shut murder case will not be as straightforward as originally believed.

The drama has proved a huge hit with viewers and broke a ratings record for ITV.

The first instalment of the drama attracted an audience of 5.4 million, positioning it as ITV's biggest drama since 2019's Cleaning Up.

It also trumped Who Wants To Be a Millionaire? drama Qiz, which debuted to 5.3million viewers.

Before the first episode, Tennant told reports he felt the 'responsibility' of portraying the serial killer.

"We are telling a story that is still within living memory, so there are members of the victims’ families who are still devastated by what Nilsen did and there are the victims whose lives have ended because of Nilsen," he said.

Des continues tonight on ITV at 9pm
