Des on ITV: What happened to Dennis Nilsen and is he still alive?

A new true-crime drama on ITV is set to explore the chilling case of serial killer Dennis Nilsen.

Dennis, which will air on the channel over three consecutive nights from Monday (September 14), will depict the police investigation into Nilsen's murders.

It is based on material from the book Killing For Company by Brian Masters and the story will be told through the prism of three men – Nilsen played by David Tennant, Detective Chief Inspector Peter Jay played by Daniel Mays and biographer Brian Masters played by Jason Watkins.

Nilsen was one of the UK's most notorious serial killers who is believed to have killed up to 15 people between 1978 and 1983.

He confessed to police in February back in 1983 after being arrested following a visit by DCI Peter Jay to 23 Cranley Gardens on February 9, 1983, to investigate human fragments of flesh and bone clogging the drains.

Nilsen was later convicted at the Old Bailey of six counts of murder and two of attempted murder and was sentenced to life imprisonment.

In 1994 this was replaced by a whole life tariff.

Nilsen died in May 2018 at the age of 72 at HMP Full Sutton. He was 34 years into his life sentence. His cause of death was pulmonary embolism and retroperitoneal haemorrhage.
