Des Cahill and his family got an early Christmas treat as he welcomed his new granddaughter.

It has been an eventful year for Cahill with the legendary broadcaster opting to step down as host of the Sunday Game.

And Cahill and family are rounding off the year as he got to meet his new granddaughter.

Sharing the great news on social media, Cahill said: "I just got the best birthday present EVER..!! To hold our new granddaughter, Ellie

"Doesn’t get better than this! Big Congrats to Áine & Paul. I’ve no doubt she will be a sporty young girl, so I’ve already spoken to her about the nominees for Sportswoman Of The Year."

And a number of people sent their well wishes.

One user said: "Congratulations Des and to Aine and Paul and your granddaughter"

While another said: "Congratulations Des and family."
