Derry to show solidarity for Afghan refugees at rally

Derry Anti-War Coalition is encouraging people to come out and show their support at an organised 'Refugee Welcome' rally supporting Afghan refugees.

The rally has been organised to take place on Tuesday August 31, at 6pm in the Guildhall Square.

Organiser Davy McAuley, of the Derry Anti-War Coalition, spoke to MyDerry to encourage people to attend the rally and support refugees fleeing Afghanistan.

He said: "The Derry Anti War Coalition are staging a rally this evening, August 31, at 6pm in support of the Afghan Refugees..

"The 20 year war in Afghanistan has cost over 2 trillion dollars and achieved nothing but misery and suffering for the Afghan people.

"Twenty years ago we campaigned against this war and time has proven us and the millions around the world who raised their voices to be correct.

"We offer our solidarity to all refugees and call for an end to all foreign wars."

This rally comes at the deadline date of US and British attempts to fly people out of Afghanistan. Many predict that there could be an incoming refugee crisis.

For the Derry Anti-War Coalition, now is the time to show support to those fleeing Afghanistan.

Davy said: "These people cannot be abandoned. The borders must be opened and safe passage granted. We want to send a clear message of solidarity from Derry.

"We want this city to be a city of sanctuary. We must make this place a welcoming refuge for those who flee war."

More details on the rally can be found on Facebook.
