Derry to host extraordinary solar system trail as part of UK creative festival

Derry is to host an exciting new 10km art installation as part of a UK wide creative festival.

The Our Place in Space trail is Northern Ireland's project for the UNBOXED: Creativity festival taking place in the UK next year.

The Northern Ireland team behind Our Place in Space is led by Derry's very own Nerve Centre and includes artists Oliver Jeffers and Die Hexen as well as award-winning scientist Professor Stephen Smartt from the Astrophysics Research Centre at Queen's University Belfast.

The team have collaborated to create this unique walking installation which will take people along the river Foyle with the trail depicting the planets of the solar system.

Visitors will walk the 10km interactive trail and become immersed in seeing our solar system and life on Earth from a totally different and unique perspective.

From creating a star to writing a symphony for the universe, from inventing a new form of transport to connecting with space watchers in Vietnam and Iraq, Our Place in Space will ensure visitors never look at the Solar System in the same way again.

People will explore what it means to live on Earth in 2022, and consider better ways to share and protect our planet in future.

Our Place in Space will also look at the idea of 'us' and 'them', looking at a new perspective to question the need for taking sides when faced with the enormity of the solar system and our place within it.

The interactive exhibition is both a visitor attraction and an immersive learning experience. Visitors can explore it from anywhere in the UK via an interactive augmented-reality app, and a far-reaching programme of learning activities and special virtual events.

The trail will move from Derry to Divis and the Black Mountain in Belfast, Cambridge, and the Ulster Transport Museum and North Down Coastal Path.
