Derry student nurse reveals how 'terrified' she was working in a Covid-19 ward

It's a situation she never expected to find herself in.

Despite studying for years to go to work in Derry's medical scene, facing up to a pandemic was a daunting prospect for volunteering student nurses at Altnagelvin Hospital.

Tonya Webb, who was in her third year as a Ulster University nursing student when the Covid-19 crisis hit, was one of several trainee nurses who volunteered to finish university early to fight the virus.

Speaking to the BBC, Tonya explained how she joined the Western Health and Social Care Trust back in March, stepping into the unknown in the process.

She said: “We were all terrified, everyone was terrified.

“We just didn’t know what we were going into.

“But once you go through those doors, you are there and you step into your role and you do what is best for your patient.”

“These people had been in ICU for a number of weeks, they have reduced mobility, we are there to help increase their mobility – it’s a long drawn out process.

“Although we were able to get patients walking with a stick again and getting muscle built up again, we can’t fix the psychological trauma they have experienced in ICU.

“That was a tough part for me."
