Derry St Patrick's Day parade under threat as councillors set to meet on Tuesday

The Derry and Strabane District Council are set to meet this afternoon to decide if their annual St Patrick's Day parade will go ahead.

The emergency meeting, which will take place at 12pm, comes after Belfast City Council agreed to cancel this year’s St Patrick’s Day parade and concert amid coronavirus fears on Monday.

Thousands of people attend both the Derry and Strabane celebrations each year.

Meanwhile, two schools in Northern Ireland were closed yesterday after a young person tested positive for coronavirus.

There are now 36 total cases of the virus on the island of Ireland, with 12 in Northern Ireland and 24 in the Republic.

Sinn Fein councillor, Sandra Duffy, confirmed yesterday that she had asked the Mayor of Derry, Michaela Boyle, to convene an urgent meeting to review plans for the two parades on Tuesday morning.

She said: "In light of the cancellation of St Patrick’s Day parades throughout the country I have asked the Mayor to convene an urgent meeting of party leaders and relevant stakeholders to discuss our own plans to ensure the safety of our citizens."

A spokesperson for Derry and Strabane District Council said that there was "no further update" but that they would provide one should plans change.
