Derry security alert: Homes evacuated following discovery of suspicious object

Homes were evacuated while the PSNI dealt with a security alert.

Police were called to St Brecans Park in Derry on Saturday, June 12, following the discovery of a suspicious object.

A number of homes were evacuated and cordons put in place while motorists were advised to stay away from the area.

Later on Saturday afternoon PSNI spokesperson said: "A security alert in St Brecans Park in Derry/Londonderry has ended after a suspicious object that was found in the area this morning (12 June) was examined and determined to be a hoax.

"Residents who had left their homes as police and ATO worked to make the scene safe have returned to them.

No roads were closed during the alert."

Inspector Farren added: "I want to thank the public and, in particular, those impacted by the alert for their cooperation. I also want to appeal to anyone who has information about this incident, or who saw or heard anything suspicious in the area, to call us on 101 and quote reference number 593 of 12/06/21."

A PSNI spokeswoman said: "Police received a report of a single vehicle road traffic collision at approximately 9.25am this morning along the Sydenham By-Pass close to the George Best City Airport. There are no serious injuries reported.

"Motorists are advised that the Sydenham By-Pass, country bound, is reduced to one lane following a one vehicle road traffic collision this morning."

Just before 11am, the PSNI issued an update to say the road had fully reopened.
