Derry's history celebrated in Tower Museum exhibitions

The Tower Museum in Derry can finally open its new exhibitions to the public after they were delayed by lockdown restrictions.

With a fascinating collection of forgotten stories, the Tower Museum is home to the history of Derry and the Northwest.

Now the museum's newest displays, running throughout the summer, promise to bring Derry's past to life and provide a interesting day out for all generations.

Shirts, Singers & Sewing – A Shirt Factory Exhibition of the North West

Focusing on the shirt factory heritage of the Northwest, the project was developed in partnership with the Inner City Trust and the Fashion & Textile Design Centre.

The pivotal role the textile industry played across the region is well known and recent activities, such as the sounding of the Shirt Factory Horn during early lockdown, the murals in the Craft Village and the development of a permanent sculpture to remember the workers, has shown the desire to celebrate this important part of our society.

The exhibition includes graphic panels looking at the history, people and collections linked to the factories. Original objects and archives will also be on display.

Tower Museum staff have also worked with a PhD student from Queens University who has developed an app which will allow visitors, using their own devices, to listen to authentic voices from the factory floor.

Discussions with the Factory Workers group will also allow the development of a programme of engagement.

Colmcille 1500 – Man and Myths

Donegal County Museum and Derry City and Strabane District Council’s Heritage and Museum Service have developed the “Colmcille: Man and Myths” exhibition which centres on the Irish saint.

Colmcille is one of the most important figures in early Christianity and even 1500 years later his story is still studied and is the inspiration for pilgrimages, stories, poetry, music and books.

This exhibition will take people on journey of discovery around the world of Colmcille in Donegal and Derry and will try to separate the man from the myth.

It includes a series of graphic panels, audio visuals, objects and artwork which will guide the visitor through the story of Colmcille.

It will also feature some family-friendly elements so visitors both young and old can explore the legends associated with the saint.

The exhibition will run until September 5 before travelling to Donegal County Museum from September 17 to February 2022.
