Derry riot accused schoolboy fails to turn up at court

A judge today issued a warrant for the arrest of a 12-year-old boy.

The District Judge, at the Juvenile Court in Derry , issued the bench warrant after the schoolboy failed to turn up for his case.

The youth was arrested during disturbances at Moss Park in the Galliagh area of Derry on the night of the European Election on May 23.

The youth, who cannot be named because of his age, has been charged with riotous assembly and with possessing a paint bomb at the time of his arrest.

In Court today his solicitor, Keith Kyle, told District Judge Barney McElholm that the schoolboy was in care and had refused to leave the care home for his scheduled court appearance.

The District Judge said while he was loathe to issue a bench warrant for the arrest of a twelve year old, he was not going to have the child dictate to him when he would attend court.

After he issued the bench warrant for the boy’s arrest, Mr McElholm said he hoped the warrant could be perfected by arrangement.
