Derry radio station to launch popular Christmas Toy Appeal this week in support of local families

A Derry radio station is launching its Christmas Toy Appeal to help local families.

River Radio is launching its local Christmas Toy Appeal on September 18 to support families in need in the North West.

This year is seen as especially important after many have struggled financially throughout the Covid-19 pandemic.

It will be bigger than ever thanks to River Radio’s support partners Toy Town, Lisnagelvin, The Salvation Army and Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District. The team at MyDerry are also pleased to support this appeal.

River Radio staff are seeking the public’s help in donating to this toy appeal. Those who donate will be helping a family in their local area, as presents donated in the appeal are given to families in need in the North West area.

Those looking to take part in this year’s toy appeal can purchase a gift at Toy Town, purchase an extra gift and put it in the toy box in store or at the drop-off sites including Elkstone Mensware, Strand Road and Irish St Community Centre.

A full list of drop off points will be listed on the River Radio Facebook page.

River Radio Toy Appeal is supporting local kids and families in the North West.

River Radio Director Gerard Doherty told MyDerry why this year’s toy appeal will be especially important to families across the North West.

He said: “Christmas time is hard on so many people, especially with what the last 2 years has unexpectedly thrown at people.

“With that in mind we decided to do what we can locally to support local kids and families in our city and area, no kid should ever have to wake up on Christmas without a toy.

“The joy of Christmas is the laughter of children and the smile and joy that lights up a room. It takes away any worries and issues of the outside world.

“We launched this campaign to achieve this goal as best we can. To make sure in our local area no kid is left out at Christmas without a toy or gift to open on Christmas morning”
