Derry principal's delight on school winning diversity and inclusion award

A Derry secondary school's efforts to make life more inclusive have been recognised at a recent award ceremony.

St. Cecilia's College in Derry recently won the 'Trust' award for their efforts in Diversity and Inclusion at the British Standards Institute.

At the award ceremony, their efforts to provide an outstanding learning support for students with additional needs was recognised.

The caring environment that St. Cecilia's College provide for their staff, pupils and families was also highlighted during the ceremony.

Martine Mulhern, principal at St. Cecilia's College told MyDerry about how much the award means for staff and pupils at the secondary school.

She said: "We are so delighted to win this award.

"It is well deserved recognition for each and every member of staff, family and partner organisation who work in partnership to provide ‘wrap-around-support’ for all of our students to ensure that they achieve to their full potential and have the confidence to achieve their goals."

The school was recognised by the British Standards Institute for their development of ‘TRUST’ by using the standard valuing people through diversity and inclusion.

Adoption of the standard enabled them to offer learning support to students with additional needs and to develop trust with students from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The standard has provided them with insight into how their diversity and inclusion policies and practices may be developed or improved upon for the benefit of the organisation and all their stakeholders.

They have fostered a truly supportive environment for staff, pupils and their families and inspiring outcomes in terms of family sustainability, mental health and life opportunities.

Vice principal, Mary Jo O’Carolan and Senior Teacher Catherine Currie picked up the award on behalf of the school at the BSI Award’s Ceremony in London.

The Award is a recognition of the dedication and hard work of all in the St. Cecilia’s Community; pupils, parents, staff, community and business partners.
