Derry organisation helps design Children in Need 2021 t-shirt

Children in Need's design for its newest t-shirt is hitting the shelves, and one Derry organisation played a key role in bringing it together.

Earlier this year, children and young people from four BBC Children in Need funded projects were tasked to get creative with materials they could find around the house and design their own version of Pudsey.

One of the projects that helped design the t-shirt is The Playhouse in Derry.

The Playhouse currently receives a three-year grant of £99,279 to deliver facilitated workshops in drama and theatre for children and young people who live in the local community.

This enables them to learn new skills and helps to develop positive relationships between young people and the local police service, encourages greater community engagement, and helps to reduce the chance of risk-taking behaviour.

Now the Playhouse will be able to see their designs come to life, with the Children in Need 2021 t shirts hitting the shelves in George in Asda.

Derry has played a central role in this year's Children in Need. Alongside helping to design the official t-shirt this year, our very own Roisin Quinn is a member of the Surprise Squad, surprising charities and organisations across the UK.

Aine McCarron, Theatre Programmer at The Playhouse said: "Taking part in this Pudsey design competition provided a much needed fun activity for these young people during lockdown.

"The work of the Street Talk programme has such a positive impact on the young people involved. They really get to explore and creatively examine issues in their lives and communities.

"Involvement in these projects also give young people opportunities to explore positive creative pathways into adulthood.”

Across Northern Ireland, BBC Children in Need currently funds 173 projects to the value of more than £9.4million.

The official t-shirt which features the face of iconic mascot Pudsey Bear is now on sale online and in Asda stores across the UK.

The t-shirt costs £8 for adults and £6 for children with 48% of the price going to benefit BBC Children in Need.
