Derry nightclub fire being tackled by NIFRS

Firefighters are battling a huge fire ripping through Envy nightclub in Derry.

It is understood that at least six fire appliances are on the scene tackling the blaze.

An aerial appliance has also been deployed.

Fire crews were called to the Strand Road area shortly before 6:47pm on Thursday, January 9.

The North West Regional College, which is situated opposite the nightclub, has been evacuated.

It is not know at this time if anyone was inside of the building during the outbreak of the fire.

A PSNI spokesperson said: "Police are assisting NIFRS in dealing with a large fire on Strand Road.

"The road is closed at Lawrence Hill and Asylum Road.

"Please avoid the area where possible.

"A number of premises have been evacuated.

"Anyone working or living in close proximity to Strand Road is asked to ensure they keep their windows shut."
