Derry Mayor opens online book of condolence for Jack Charlton

The Mayor of Derry has opened a 'Virtual Book of Condolence' following the death of  Jack Charlton.

The Derry City and Strabane District Council have released a link where supporters can express their sympathies to the family.

Known affectionately as "Big Jack", the legendary former Republic of Ireland boss died last Friday at the age of 85.

He spent his entire 21-year playing career at Leeds, making a joint club record 773 appearances, before retiring as a player in 1973 and going on to enjoy a successful and colourful career as a manager.

One of football's most popular and larger-than-life characters, he had spells in charge of Sheffield Wednesday, Middlesbrough, Newcastle and the Republic of Ireland, who he guided to their first major finals at Euro 88 and two more in the space of 10 years.

Mayor Tierney said the Book of Condolence was an opportunity for the people to share their happy memories of the Jack Charlton era.

Mayor Tierney said: "He gave us many happy memories and reasons to celebrate. He established Ireland as a force in world football and in return we adopted him as one of our own.

"Sympathy and prayers  to his family."
