Derry man's '12 dips of Christmas' raises over £3,000 for sick children

A Derry man's challenge to raise money for the children's ward at Altnagelvin Hospital has proved a huge success.

John McBride completed his '12 Dips of Christmas' on Christmas Day and has since announced that he raised over £3,000 for charity.

Speaking to MyDerry last month, John explained why he wanted to raise the vital funds for "Parents of Wards 6 and 16" who provide support to children with life-limiting medical conditions.

He said: "My nephew has been in and out of Altnagelvin, the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast and hospitals in London since he was born five years ago.

"This also meant that he is clinically vulnerable so he and his sister have both been shielding throughout the pandemic which has been really difficult for them."

He added: "What this charity does, Parents of Ward 6 and 16, is they provide for the unmet needs of children who use the hospital regularly, whether it be decorating the rooms so they are less clinical looking, getting touch screen devices and TVs for children.

"It is about making that stay in hospital easier and more comfortable for parents and children.

"My massive thanks to every single person who has donated. Things have been tight this year, especially around Christmas time."

Writing on Facebook, the Parents of Ward's 6 and 16 said: "We would like to say a huge thank you to John, his final donation total was £3027.54.

"An incredible amount and a very brave challenge to commit to in the month of December."
