Derry incident as shots fired and PSNI attacked with petrol bombs

Petrol bombs were thrown at police and a number of shots have been fired in Derry tonight as trouble broke out.

There were reports of disturbances in the Creggan area and a major security operation was in place.

It is understood petrol bombs, bricks and bottles were thrown at police following raids.

There were also reports a hijacked van was set on fire and fireworks were thrown at police during rioting.

On Twitter, the Police Federation for Northern Ireland said: “Absolutely no excuse for attacking PSNI colleagues in this manner. They are protecting that community and aren’t there for the good of their health. Such behaviour should be roundly condemned.”
