Derry Girls writer feeling "smug cos the soundest person in Normal People is a Nordie"

New Irish drama Normal People has got big thumbs up from the writer of hit comedy show Derry Girls.

Lisa McGee boasted last week on social media that she "shamelessly whined" until she got preview episodes of the new show, which has since aired on BBC.

"OH MY GOD it’s stunning!" she said.

"The script, the performances, the direction it conjures up an Ireland that is authentic and mythical all at once. A massive ride of a show."

The new series, which you can now binge watch to your heart's content on BBC iPlayer, follows the roller coaster relationship between wealthy Sligo girl Marianne and the family cleaner's son Connell.

The show is set in Sligo and later Dublin and was produced by award-winning Element Pictures, who were also behind Belfast-filmed Dublin Murders, The Favourite, Room and The Lobster.

Irish actor, Paul Mescal, plays the role of popular, good looking GAA player Connell, while rebellious, intelligent loner Marianne is played by English actress Daisy Edgar-Jones.

The pair strike up a relationship as teenagers that continues into their 20s and throughout their studies at Trinity - and its ups and downs will have you gripped.

Northman Niall, who is Connell's roommate at college, is played by 26-year-old Desmond Eastwood from Lisburn.
