Derry Girls writer, Aisling Bea and Andrew Scott among Irish talent shortlisted to win a BAFTA this year

Derry Girls was among a host of Irish hits shortlisted to take home a Bafta this year.

The nominees for the BAFTA TV Awards 2020 announced yesterday featured a list of Irish talent in all talent and craft areas of TV, including the acclaimed Channel 4 series.

It was nominated in the ‘Best Scripted Comedy’ category, where it will go up against shows like Fleabag, Catastrophe and Stath Lets Flats which is up for Best Scripted Comedy alongside Sharon Horgan’s Catastrophe.

This marks the second time that Derry Girls has been up for a BAFTA.

The show’s first series narrowly lost out to Sally4Ever at the 2019 awards.

The cast and creators gushed about the news with Nicola Coughlan, who plays ‘Wee Clare Devlin’, writing: “So proud of the whole Derry Girls fam it means so much thank you.”

Show creator Lisa McGee also expressed her thanks, writing: “Hugely honoured. Thank you @BAFTA “

Irish actress Aisling Bea, from Co Kildare, has also been nominated in the Breakthrough Talent category for her writing on her Channel 4 show This Way Up which co-starred Sharon Horgan.

Aisling is up against drama director Aneil Karia, Sex Education writer Laurie Nunn, and Responsible Child writer Sean Buckley.

The Graham Norton Show is once again shortlisted for Comedy Entertainment Programme while Graham himself is among the nominees for Entertainment Performance.

BBC police drama Line of Duty, starring Adrian Dunbar is up for the Must-See Moment, as voted for by the public.

Dublin actor Andrew Scott is also shortlisted for the confessional scene between his character and Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge.

Fleabag is also up for three TV and three craft awards with writer and lead Waller-Bridge nominated in the Writer: Comedy categoery as well as for Female Performance in a Comedy.

Winners of the 2020 Virgin Media British Academy Television Awards will be revealed on Friday 31 July.
