Derry Girls stars warn about threats to peace in Northern Ireland due to Brexit

Stars of hit TV show Derry Girls have warned about the threats to peace in Northern Ireland posed by Brexit .

It come after they were praised for an episode of the comedy series recalling the 1994 ceasefire which paved the way for the Good Friday Agreement.

Siobhan McSweeney who plays Sister Michael tweeted: "After watching tonight’s episode of #DerryGirls do you now see why I get so upset when Westminster threatens the GFA? Peace was hard won and remains a delicate precious thing."

While Nicola Coughlan who plays schoolgirl Clare said: "Also can tonight’s Derry Girls please remind people in Westminster how hard people fought for peace in Northern Ireland and how they deserve so much more than being a pawn in their Brexit."

Viewers on either side of the Irish sea praised the latest episode of Lisa McGee's series for highlighting the importance of protecting peace in the province.

Tuesday night's episode saw the three Northern Irish girls and the English cousin attending their end-of-year formal, a 50s themed prom.

At the same time the adults at home listened to the announcement of the IRA ceasefire on TV.

The ceasefire began in 1994 and eventually led to the Good Friday Agreement of 1998, which effectively ended violent conflict in Northern Ireland, and which may now be threatened by Brexit.
