Derry Girls star Siobhan McSweeney warns against 'death trap' cube plugs after flat goes on fire

A fire has gutted the home of popular Derry Girls star Siobhan McSweeney.

The actress, who plays Sister Michael in the hit Channel 4 series, was not at home when a cube plug at her bedside sparked the devastating blaze.

The Cork native explained how firefighters chopped down her front door and discovered the “whole flat in acrid smoke and my bedroom so hot it had cracked the windows", Belfast Live reports.

She explained that a fire chief told her that it was caused by a cube double adaptor that had fallen out of the socket and created an ‘electrical arc’ which “sparked and started the fire”.

She told her 40,000 Twitter followers: “I’ve got some bad news. Last night my flat went on fire.

"Thankfully I was out at a stupid play otherwise it could have been a worse story.

"The fire alarms alerted my neighbours and thankfully they’re all safe too.

“Their kindness last night was an extraordinary thing. The thought of something happening to them makes me feel even more nauseous. Lovely old buildings and their thick walls.

“Two fire brigades arrived, chopped down my new front door to discover the whole flat in acrid smoke and my bedroom so hot it had cracked the window".

“The fire investigator did a thorough examination. He finally took me aside and explained what happened.

"The cube double adaptor had fallen out slightly (less than 2mm) out of the socket by my bedside and had created an ‘electrical arc’ which sparked and started the fire.

“It had smoldered through my mattress and created such a heat it has melted the fire alarms and the fuse box in the hall next door. He assured me it wasn’t my fault.”

Siobhan urged people to “get rid” of cube plugs.

She said: “I’ve called my brother and he had a few in the house. Now in the bin.

"Please please get rid of them. They are structured badly and it only takes a mm for there to be a spark.”
