Derry Girls star shares emotional post ahead of special hour-long episode tonight

Derry Girls actress Tara Lynne O'Neil has posted an emotional tweet goodbye to her lovable character Ma Mary, ahead of the hour-long special episode of the Channel 4 show on Wednesday.

Tara, who is best known for playing the ever-sarcastic, yet reasonable Ma Mary on the Channel 4 sitcom, posted a sentimental farewell to the show on Tuesday evening.

In the tweet, she wrote: "Goodbye Mary x I hope I served ya well x # DerryGirls."

She posted a photo of the much-loved lunchboxes, and her iconic Ma Mary wig, as she said bye to the amazing sitcom.

Siobhan McSweeney, who plays Sister Michael in the show, replied saying: "Joan. The very best of us."

Another Twitter user said: "You have done all the Ma’s proud. Will miss Ma Mary and Aunt Sarah….youse r sum craic!"

Others said: "I hope you left the punt purse! Thank you, honestly, for all of it."

And a third wrote: "I can't imagine how hard it must be to say goodbye to a character you created and made as real as you did Ma Mary.

"The girls and "the wee English fella" were beyond grand but for me Ma Mary was the heart and soul of #DerryGirls #IrishMammies #ForTheMammies"

Another added: "Ah Ma Mary I love you! Can I have your #BigBowl jumper please and thank you? Sorry you haven’t had your ‘Jamie Dornan is your milkman and you fall in love’ storyline - always the finale! #DerryGirls"

And a fifth said: "You nailed Derry mammys, the strong women who held it all together during the troubles and ran the house like clockwork taking no crap, so sad to see yous go! Yous did Derry proud!"

Tara replied to all these kind words, stating: "I cannot Thankyou all enough for you lovely responses x Derry Girls changed my life - it’s a state of mind apparently !!! Xxx"

The final, hour-long special episode will air on Wednesday, May 18 at 9pm on Channel 4 - set a year later from the season's final episode on Tuesday night.
