Derry Girls star says the next season is a 'cracker' after some bad news for fans

With Lisa McGee confirming that Season 3 of Derry Girls will be the final one, fans are taking comfort in knowing that the gang will be back next year with new episodes.

With cameras set to start rolling on the new episodes very soon, Siobhàn McSweeney (Sister Michael) has shared her thanks to the fans of the show and hinted that the next season is going to be a treat.

"There we are now. What ride it has been alright. We had no idea it would go like this. Thank you all. Especially to the people of Derry and Northern Ireland. And be warned, series 3 is a cracker. Dusting off the habit and sending out to be dry cleaned," she said.

While the show will wrap after Season 3, there's a strong possibility of a Derry Girls film.

McGee has previously said that she'd be interested in writing a feature-length adventure for the gang and the majority of the cast have also said they'd be interested in a film.

During her most recent announcement, McGee was coy about the potential of a Derry Gils film.

"Who knows if Erin, Clare Orla, Michelle and James will return in some other guise someday? But for now, this is it for us, and we're excited to start filming the series with our incredible cast and crew to hopefully take our loyal fans on one last adventure," she said.

Regarding season three of the show, filming will begin "very soon", according to one of the show's stars.

Tara Lynne O'Neill, who plays Ma Mary, previously confirmed that the third series of Lisa McGee's wonderful comedy is already in pre-production.

At present, Ms O'Neill is occupied with her acclaimed play Rough Girls which is showing in Belfast's Lyric Theatre.

But she's looking forward to joining the rest of the cast later this month.

During a recent interview with the excellent podcast Talking Derry Girls, the actress gave an insight into her immediate timetable and disclosed what she'll be doing after Rough Girls wraps up its run on September 25.

"I have four days after we finish here to go into Derry Girls, but I cannot wait," she said.

"It's like two and a half years ago that we filmed season two. I've seen some people, but just to get back in and this will be the first time that I ever get to do the read-through because the first season I wasn't cast when they did the read-through, I was only cast the week before.

"And then on the second season, I had vertigo and couldn't fly. So I actually get to play Ma Mary in the readthrough. I've already said to Lisa, 'please let me know if I kick the bucket in episode two, that's all I need to know to know.' So we're filming right through to Christmas," she said.
