Derry Girls star Saoirse-Monica Jackson shows off her 'general Irish accent' for new movie role

Derry Girls star Saoirse-Monica Jackson showed off her new 'general Irish accent' she has taken on as part of a new movie role.

The 25-year-old actress who plays Erin in the hit comedy told Xpose reporter, Nadine Reid, the new accent is easier for the American audience to understand.

She said: "I'm doing a 'general Irish accent' on this so I think that accent is a bit more understandable than my very Derry (accent).

"You know that town General that we're all from?

"This is the accent that it is set in so I'm happy to have the opportunity to do a different accent."

The Derry native - who was speaking on the set of her new movie in Coleraine - spoke of her fondness for the crew and cast and added that it has "taken a while" for people to get used to her home grown accent.

She said: "I'm really enjoying working with all the American crew and we've got some great crew from all over Ireland as well so I'm having a ball.

"And the actors I get to work alongside are absolutely fantastic and a pleasure to work with.

"It's definitely took a while (for American crew members to get used to her accent)...

"I said hips the other day and the director said, 'hops? What's a hops?' and I was like, your hips... like, your hips don't lie Brian."

Jackson also expressed her excitement around rumours that Friends star, Courteney Cox, has watched Derry Girls.

The American actress was in Northern Ireland recently with her partner and rockstar Johnny McDaid who played in Bangor, Co Down, with his band Snow Patrol.

Jackson said: "I've heard Courteney Cox has watched Derry Girls which is obviously mega.

"The Open House Festival was headlined with Snow Patrol and it had Two Door Cinema Club supporting and then Bono done a surprise performance.

"A couple of my friends told me they done a montage of people from the North of Ireland - past and present - and Derry Girls showed up in that.

"Being told that is just an amazing thing that the country has responded so well to this TV show, so it's amazing."

The full interview with Saoirse-Monica Jackson will air on Xpose on Virgin Media One tomorrow night at 6pm.
