Derry Girls star Saoirse-Monica Jackson says show's echoing of present political turmoil is 'accidental'

Derry Girls star Saoirse-Monica Jackson said it was “accidental” that the hit show’s storyline has echoed the political turmoil in the country recently.

The 25-year-old added the comedy, set during the tail end of the Troubles, is a great way to remind people why they don’t want to return to those times.

Ms Jackson told the Irish Mirror: “I think Derry Girls definitely mirrors the political situation at the moment. I do think that was accidental.

“But I think Derry Girls is a brilliant way to remind people we don’t want to return to a place like that.”

Despite the pressure of following such a successful opening season, the actress had no doubt that whatever Derry born writer and creator Lisa McGee penned for season two would be just as big of a hit.

Saoirse-Monica, who plays protagonist Erin, said: “It’s been amazing. It’s been absolutely fantastic.

Derry Girls star Saoirse-Monica Jackson reveals how she was breathalysed by mum outside a disco as a teenager

“Luckily, it takes the pressure off us the fact Lisa is such a great writer and we have no doubt before these scripts came in and especially after we have seen them. So it is a privilege to work [with her].

Keeping tight-lipped about the possibility of more seasons after the third one hits Channel 4 next year, she said: “I think Lisa’s definitely following the story of these girls being in school but I could never guess the madness of what she is going to come up with next.

“I am definitely enjoying the experience of being on the show right now.”

Derry Girls follows the misadventures of four teenage Catholic school girls and their male English sidekick.

But Saoirse-Monica said it could easily have been written from the other side.

She added: “This is what Lisa has done so well. The show could be easily be from a Protestant family.

The Derry Girls cast returned for season 2 (Channel 4)

Derry Girls writer 'thrilled' about returning to Channel 4 for third series

“This is a show about teenage girls and families.”

In the final episodes of season two, her character Erin became closer to their English friend James, played by Dylan Llewellyn.

But speaking at the Peter Mark VIP Style Awards last week, the actress remained coy about whether the teens will strike
up a romance in season three.

She said: “I remember watching shows as a teenage girl and rooting for that to happen but ultimately that is down to Lisa.

“But I think there is something to be said that boys and girls at that age can be friends.

“And I think there is a loyalty that James showed up on the door for Erin. But who knows?”
