Derry Girls star Saoirse-Monica Jackson reveals how she was breathalysed by mum outside a disco as a teenager

Derry Girls star Saoirse-Monica Jackson has revealed how her mum breathalysed her outside a disco.

The 25-year-old who plays 15-year-old Erin Quinn in the hit Channel 4 show spoke of how she’d sneak off to parties as a teen.

She said: “My friends and I - the original Derry Girls - used to sneak out to bars all the time, but my parents would always find me, hand me a tracksuit and a jumper and just drag me out.

"My ma once breathalysed me outside a disco, which scarred me for life. It was a constant battle, which I'm now forever grateful for."

Derry Girls writer 'thrilled' about returning to Channel 4 for third series

The Derry native added that she wanted her parents to realise that she was mature enough to go to a Kanye West gig on her own in Belfast.

She also spoke about how playing teenager in the show helped her to feel “that carefree, confident sense of hope”.

She told the Sunday Times: “When you're a teenager, you're experimenting with who you want to be, and as you get older you feel more pressurised, feel expectations, life comes into play."
