Derry Girls star Saoirse-Monica Jackson 'lost for words' after award win at Royal Television Society

Derry Girls star Saoirse-Monica Jackson has said she is "lost for words" after scooping a top gong in London last night.

The 26-year-old, who plays Erin Quinn in the hit series, won Best Comedy Performance (Female) at the Royal Television Society Programme Awards.

The award show was held behind closed doors amid coronavirus concerns but was streamed via video link.

Taking to Twitter after her win, she said: "Sweet Jesus , I’m lost for words. Drinking black velvet in isolation. Feel so lucky to be part of such a cracker show."

The Royal Television Society described her role as "a truly standout performance in a brilliantly funny series".

A number of other Irish stars were nominated at the award show last night, including Aisling Bea for the Breakthrough Award for her comedy This Way Up.

The Young Offenders' stars Alex Murphy and Chris Walley were also shortlisted for a gong, while Derry Girls itself was nominated for Best Scripted Comedy.

Meanwhile, Niamh Algar was shortlisted for Best Actor (Female) for her performance in The Virtues.
