Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan is hoping for Jamie Dornan to join the cast on new movie

Derry Girls star Nicola Coughlan is hoping for Jamie Dornan to join the cast to add some drama to the potential new movie.

The star, best known as ‘wee Clare’ in the hit homegrown comedy, is set to swap her panicky teen ways to star as the precocious Penelope, in Netflix’ eagerly anticipated period drama, Bridgerton this Christmas.

But with season three of Derry Girls ready and waiting to kick off filming again, and talks of a movie too, the Galway born star revealed she’s already dreaming up her own new plot twists for the Derry based drama.

“I think Jamie Dornan should be in every scene because it would really add to the drama.

“Of course, Lisa doesn’t heed 90 percent of what we say which is why she is such a good writer,” she laughed.

Nicola, 32, was the first actor to get cast in Bridgerton back in April 2019.

With just weeks until the show drops on the streaming service on Christmas day, the Derry girl admitted she's still in disbelief at bagging the role.

“I still pinch myself about how it happened,” she told RTE Guide of her time on the Shonda Rhimes show, which is narrated by the one and only Julie Andrews.

“I never thought that the most powerful woman in television would have seen Derry Girls but she had.

“And after she watched my audition tape, she said that’s her.”

She added: “I still get imposter syndrome.

“It’s like why have they picked me.”

Acting was all the Galway girl turned Derry Girl phenomenon ever wanted to do.

“I had my first ever job when I was nine (My Brother’s War).

“I got a day off school, got paid £30 and thought, this is the life for me.”

But reflecting on the tough times before her life changed forever thanks to Derry Girls, she said the lessons she learned on her way to the top have made her success that little bit more sweet.

“There were tough times but you learn a lot about people and respect.

“And being able to do the job I have now makes me feel so lucky. I wouldn’t change a thing.”
