Derry Girls' Saoirse-Monica Jackson nominated for Royal Television Society Award

Lisa McGee's much-loved comedy Derry Girls is up for a number of Royal Television Society awards this year.

The nominations for the 2020 award ceremony were announced today, with the hit Northern Irish comedy getting two nods in total, one for Best Scripted Comedy, and one for Saoirse-Monica Jackson as Best Comedy performance (Female).

The show previously won the Best Scripted Comedy award in 2019, with judges praising it as “Skilful, special and truthful, combining super-smart writing with outstanding acting."

There's an extra bonus this year, as this is the first time that an individual actress from Derry Girls has been nominated for the Best Comedy Performance award, which was won last year by Lesley Manville.

There's some tough competition for Jackson though, as the Derry born actress is set to go up against Fleabag's Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Motherland's Diane Morgan.

Taking to Twitter, Saoirse-Monica shared the news this morning, writing: "Such an honour to be nominated beside these two legends , thank you @RTS_media"

The news comes as audiences await news about the third series of Derry Girls.

Back in January, actor Dylan Llewellyn hinted that he thought season three would begin filming in 2020.

During a brief interview with FM104's Thomas Crosse at the National Television Awards, Llewellyn - who plays James on the show - said that the groundwork for the new series is being laid at the moment.

"Series 3 is in the works," he said, speaking on NTA red carpet. "We're doing it hopefully later this year."

On top of that, there has been speculation that a Derry Girls film might be in the works somewhere down the line. Show creator Lisa McGee said that the idea of a movie adaption was something she'd like to "explore".

Winners for RTS Programme Awards Ceremony will be announced on Tuesday 17th March.
