Derry Girls ranked as one of the best shows of 2019 by top TV magazine

Empire Magazine has revealed their top 20 TV shows of 2019 - and there are a few familiar names of the list.

Derry Girls , which was created by Northern Irish writer Lisa McGee and follows a group of school teens in Derry in the '90s, was praised as one of the best shows of the year, with Empire calling it "The perfect mixture of warmth and wit."

The show was a hit with audiences in the UK and Ireland, and has been met with praise across the world after airing on Netflix.

A description on the site reads: "Lisa McGee's 1990s Norn Iron-set sitcom followed up its smash debut run with an even more confident second series, securing itself as Britain's favourite new comedy.

It continued: "While the Troubles provide a serious backdrop to events, the foreground remains gut-bustingly funny, its lovable cast - Saoirse Monica-Jackson, Louisa Harland, Nocla Coughlan, Jamie-Lee O'Donnell, Dylan Llewellyn - delivering lightning-fast gags at a rate of knots. The perfect mixture of warmth and wit."

Derry Girls was joined on the prestigious list by Line of Duty , Game of Thrones and Dublin Murders - all of which were filmed in Northern Ireland.

Northern Ireland Screen, which has overseen major developments in filming and production across Northern Ireland in recent years, reacted appreciatively to the news.

Speaking about the success of Northern Irish-made TV shows this year, Richard Williams, CEO of Northern Ireland Screen , said: "Nothing starts an argument quite like a roundup of the year’s best TV shows but we have to agree with Empire’s top 20 with one fifth of it made up of series made right here in Northern Ireland.

"We were delighted to see Derry Girls, Line of Duty, Dublin Murders and Game of Thrones alongside many other global hits. We really do have the best crew in the world and this recognition is thanks to them."

Derry Girls was renewed for a third series in April, and is expected to be on our screens in early 2020.
