'Derry Girls' GAA jersey saves Irish shirt factory from closing down

Hugely popular sitcom Derry Girls has saved a factory from closing after manufacturers decided to make jerseys featuring the characters.

Derry city was once renowned for its shirt-making tradition with thousands employed in 40 factories across the city in the 1920s.

However, by this year just one factory remained with 20 employees and it was due to close its doors this May.

Happily, GAA brand O'Neills stepped in with a solution. They took over the factory and introduced five jerseys featuring images and slogans from the hit series, including "I'm a Derry Girl", "Sweet suffering Jehovah" and "Catch yerself on".

The jerseys cost €50 for an adult jersey and €35 for a child and have been a huge hit both locally and internationally.

Managing Director of O'Neill's Kieran Kennedy told RTE's Morning Ireland: "When we heard this last shirt factory was closing, we took the opportunity to get these skilled staff, we also took the opportunity to make sure these skills weren't lost to the city of Derry.

"We took it over to increase our own production."

Speaking about the new jerseys, Kieran said: "I got a few of the designers to come up with the designs and we got in contact with some of the licensers of the products and they gave us a lot of assets too, in terms of photographs and stuff.

"They've caught on and there's a lot of publicity about it now. We're very happy with the way it's gone.
