Derry Girls fans spot 'missing' item as creator issues explanation

The creator of Derry Girls has issued an explanation after fans spotted a "missing" item in the latest episode.

Viewers of the popular Channel 4 programme have been thrilled as the acclaimed show returned for its third season this month. The latest edition showed Erin, Clare, Michelle, Orla and James perform a hilarious tribute to the Spice Girls at a school talent show.

The routine left fans in stitches, but many noticed that Erin had ditched Geri Horner's famous Union Jack dress. The programme is set against the backdrop of the Troubles in Northern Ireland and the show creator, Lisa McGee, explained the unionist symbolism of the Union Jack is at odds with the belief's of the sitcom's Catholic characters.

Lisa McGee told Digital Spy : "Erin is Ginger, but we haven't done the Union Jack dress because that would have been not okay to Catholics in Derry. Our amazing costume designer made her a glittery dress with a peace sign on."

Viewers following the show on Twitter praised the decision.

Shirin said: "Good shout from #DerryGirls not putting Erin in THAT iconic Geri dress"

Donns added: "Love how Erin didn't wear that dress"

Kirsty commented: "love the lack of the ‘iconic’ union jack dress."

Chloe posted : "Derry Girls making the excellent choice to not put erin in the union jack dress as ginger spice we love to see it"

Derry Girls airs Tuesdays at 9.15pm on Channel 4
