Derry Girls creator says Season 3 will be more 'ambitious' than the first two with 'lots of big setpieces'

With a renewed sense of optimism and hope in the US following the recent election, it's fitting that the Season 2 finale of Lisa McGee's wonderful comedy Derry Girls ended on a similar note.

Of course, the final episode in the second season saw James deciding to stay in Derry as the gang shared a euphoric moment during Bill Clinton's famous speech at Derry's Guildhall.

Since that episode aired, Lisa McGee has been quite busy with her latest show, The Deceived, proving to be a hit with viewers too and the talented writer has now released a book that's based on Derry Girls.

Right from the very first scene where Orla was reading Erin's diary, viewers knew that McGee's show was a one-of-a-kind comedy about what it's like to be a teenager living during The Troubles.

Well, we're sure that Erin's Diary: An Official Derry Girls Book will be a cracker gift for fans of the show this Christmas because it dives deeper into the events we have seen unfold on the screen.

Aside from this, the tie-in book also unveils brand new stories and never-before-revealed details about characters.

Here's hoping that Orla doesn't find it Erin's diary to be too boring this time!

While the book should tide fans over, all eyes are on Season 3 of the Channel 4 comedy which was originally scheduled to be filming this year, however, COVID-19 put a dampener on those plans.

During a recent interview with Ray D'Arcy on RTE, McGee gave an update on the status of the new season and said that when compared to Seasons 1 and 2, it's "quite ambitious" with more "big set pieces"

"It's written. We're all ready to go. Season 3 is quite ambitious but we had to push back filming it, we're trying to line it all up again. So, we're working that out now. We're all just dying to get back now, we all miss it and we miss each other.

So, as soon as we can we will. We didn't want to compromise the show because the filming restrictions were quite strict. It would have been impossible to film it when we were supposed to. Hopefully, we won't be waiting too long," said McGee.

In terms of broad comedy setpieces, the show has already found humour from Orange Order parades, abseiling, flaming sambuca shots, funerals, proms, Take That concerts, a US president, and that famous chalkboard.

However, McGee said that the scale will only get bigger in the next few episodes.

"Season 3 is quite ambitious. It is a little show but we want to really push what we can do. Series 3 we've lots of big set pieces and we really want to go for it.

Hopefully, we can do that as soon as it's possible," she said.
