Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee confirms talks are underway for a movie

Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee has confirmed talks are taking place to get the ball rolling for a movie version of the hit show.

The mastermind behind the Channel 4 comedy also hinted that there will be some new faces and guest stars set to join the cast in season three.

The popular series, which has been the broadcaster’s most successful comedy since Father Ted, has been the most watched series in Northern Ireland since records began.

And set to bring that fame from the small screen to the cinemas, McGee recently revealed a Derry Girls feature film is something she would like “explore”

When asked about the possibility of the project, the Derry born writer said: “It’s definitely something we are talking about and it’s something I would like to explore.

“It’s just about making sure the story is right so it’s about me figuring all of that out at some point.”

Hinting at what is to come in the third series of the award winning Channel 4 comedy series, she said the shows favourite characters Erin, Orla, Michelle, Clare and James will have some growing up to do.

She said: “They’re still eejits and they still get into a lot of trouble, but they’re certainly going to grow up a little bit.”

Speaking to Red Carpet News she went on to say she will be continuing to keep the polical streak within the storylines.

“There’s definitely a very personal journey that they go on, as well as a political one.

“It’s an exciting time for them as they’re just on the cusp of adulthood.”

The mother-of-two, who just welcomed her second baby in October 2019, added: "There’s lots of new guest characters, as always.

“In every episode, we have a new big guest star come in..

“That’s really exciting, writing those.

“That has been good craic, looking forward to shooting all of that.”

The first series of Derry Girls was broadcast in early January 2018, with the second series arriving in March of last year.

McGee has yet to confirm an official return date for the third series.
