Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee again hints at movie after show ends

Derry Girls creator Lisa McGee has reiterated her wish to make a film and said that it's something she'd "love to do".

Last week, the talented writer confirmed that season three of the beloved comedy will be its last.

But she also teased plans that a big screen adaption could be on the way in the future.

She said: "Who knows if Erin, Clare Orla, Michelle and James will return in some other guise someday? But for now, this is it for us, and we're excited to start filming the series with our incredible cast and crew to hopefully take our loyal fans on one last adventure."

Over the weekend, Ms McGee was acknowledged with an honorary doctorate by Queens University and speaking with the BBC following the ceremony, she reaffirmed plans to take Derry Girls to the big screen.

When asked what's next after season three, McGee said: "There might be...I'd love to do...perhaps a movie of Derry Girls and then I have a few other projects but they're very early days at the minute. I hope so. I haven't even thought about it (Derry Girls film) yet.

Speaking about the decision to wrap up the show, McGee said that it was always the plan.

"We've always known that we wanted to do three series and all the actors kind of knew that as well. We've known this was coming but I think we've become like family ourselves, the cast and the crew so it'll be sad when we wrap that last day," she said.

Before the end though, there's the very happy thought of new Derry Girls episodes to look forward to and McGee has also confirmed that the cast and crew are in the rehearsal stages of the new season.

Nicola Coughlan (Clare) also gave an update on her filming schedule on the new episodes when she said: "So, Derry Girls will start filming anything I’m not in first while I finish filming Bridgerton, the moment I wrap I’ll take of the corset and get back into the green uniform."
