It has been announced that series three of Derry Girls will be the sitcom's final season.
In a statement shared on Twitter on Thursday, creator of the Channel 4 series Lisa McGee explained that it was always the plan that the show would last for three series.
Lisa penned: "It was always the plan to say goodbye after three series. Derry Girls is a coming of age story; following five ridiculous teenagers as they slowly..very slowly…start to become adults, while around them the place they call home and starts to change too and Northern Ireland enters a new more hopeful phase - which was a small, magical window of time."
The talented writer continued: "Derry Girls is a love letter to the place I come from and the people who shaped me. It had been an honour to write it and I will be forever proud of everything it’s achieved."

Lisa went on to share how she is proud of the show and grateful to Channel 4 for allowing her to make it.
"I’d like to thank the people of Derry and Northern Ireland for getting behind up. Thanks also to the team behind the series, the incredible Hat Trick productions and a special thanks to Channel 4 - the channel I grew up watching; the channel that made me want to write comedy and the only channel that could have made our show."
Lisa finished the message: "Who knows if Erin, Clare, Orla, Michelle and James will return in some other guise someday, but for now this is it for us and we’re excited to start filming this series without incredible cast and crew and to hopefully take our loyal fans on one last adventure. "
Below the post, fans sent Lisa kind messages.
One encouraged: "You need to write another Northern Irish show. We are not done with your brilliant writing and highlighting Northern Irish talent."
A second joined in: "I’m so glad you’re bringing the show to an ending in the way you want. I’ve rewatched the first two seasons so many times already and can’t wait to see what comes next."
A third added: "Can't wait for season three and thank you thank you thank you for creating such a brilliant, hilarious & inspiring show!."
