Derry Girls book 'Erin's Diary' on the way as fans await third season

A Derry Girls book is on the way as fans await the highly anticipated third season.

Whilst filming for the next season is on hold, the novel, titled ‘Erin’s Diary’ by show mastermind Lisa McGee will be published in November.

It comes after the writer revealed she has been plotting to get writing Derry Girls The Movie after season three is finally finished.

Speaking to Stylist about the book, Derry native McGee said: “I’m thrilled to be able to share our first ever official Derry Girls Book with the world.

“Erin’s Diary was such a joy to write. I loved spending time with these characters again.

“The book will reveal some new information about old events as well as some brand new antics from Erin and the gang – hopefully it will keep fans laughing until series three hits the screen.”

The award winning Channel 4 show follows teenagers Orla, Clare, Michelle and Erin and Dylan, ‘the wee English fella’ navigating their testing teen years during The Troubles in Northern Ireland.

Fans of the show will know that Erin is an avid writer in her diary, and the novel, written from her viewpoint, is set to explore her own ‘troubles’.

The synopsis reads: “Erin has troubles of her own, like the fact that the boy she’s in love with (actually in LOVE with) doesn’t know she exists.

“Or that her Ma and Aunt Sarah make her include her weirdo cousin Orla in everything she does.

“Or that head teacher Sister Michael refuses to acknowledge Erin as a literary genius.

“Not to mention the fact that her second best friend has ALMOST had sex, whereas Erin’s never even kissed anyone yet.

“These are Erin’s Troubles.”

Sharing the news on Wednesday, Orion Publishing said: “We are delighted to announce that we’re publishing the official #DerryGirls book, #ErinsDiary in November!!”

Also commenting on the news, Saoirse-Monica Jackson said: “Erin’s Diary is out in November, be kind to your self and make sure you hear from, well..The voice of a generation!!!”

Although the third season was confirmed this year, coronavirus has halted production.

Complete with newspaper clippings, doodles, poetry, school reports, handwritten notes from her friends, Erin’s Diary will dive deeper into the events we have seen unfold on the screen and unveil brand new stories while fans await the TV return.
