Derry Girls actress hints at role in new Barbie movie

Derry Girls and Bridgerton actress Nicola Coughlan has hinted that she might star in the upcoming Barbie film.

The 35-year-old from Galway teased that she will be starring alongside Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa in an upcoming project. This comes after Gatwa, 29, was recently announced as the next Doctor Who.

Gatwa took to Instagram to share photos of himself alongside Coughlan from the BAFTA TV Awards with the writing, 'a pair of dolls'. The Derry Girls star told Variety that Gatwa has been announced for the mystery project but that she has yet to be.

And Coughlan later confirmed that she is on a project with Gatwa but that it is not Doctor Who. Gatwa revealed that he will be working on Barbie alongside his co-star Emma Mackey in spring this year.

He took to Instagram to share images including actor's chairs with his and Mackey's names printed in pink. The Sex Education star captioned the post with, "Come on Barbie, let's go party...".

The Barbie film is set for release on July 21, 2023. Greta Gerwig will be directing the movie and has also co-written the script alongside her husband, Noah Baumbach.

Actor Ryan Gosling will also star in the film, playing the role of Barbie's boyfriend Ken. The live-action feature film will have an all-star cast with the likes of Will Ferrell (Elf), Issa Rae (Insecure), Simu Liu (Shang-Chi), Kate McKinnon (SNL), America Ferrera (Ugly Betty), Michael Cera (Juno) and Alexandra Shipp (tick, tick...BOOM!).

The film has also been rumoured to have multiple versions of Barbie and Ken with other A-listers being considered for roles. The iMDb page includes Coughlan on the cast list, with the film synopsis: "A doll living in 'Barbieland' is expelled for not being perfect enough and sets off on an adventure in the real world. A Live-action feature film based on the popular line of Barbie toy".
