Derry Culture Night 2021: Guide to the events happening

The streets of Derry will be filled with music, art, poetry and tours highlighting the city's history this Culture Night.

Culture Night 2021 is taking place this Friday, September 17. A full programme of events is available to view on the Derry City and Strabane District Council website.

Here is a snapshot of some of the events taking place this Culture Night:

Irish Modernisms CCA, Artillery St. 5-11pm.

  • Featuring Phillip McCrilly, James Ashe, Rachael Campbell-Palmer, Grace McMurray, Ben Weir, co-curated by Catherine Hemelryk and Matt Retallick. From architecture to infrastructure to every day domestic design, the works highlight the complex and nuanced influence of modernism in the north.

Mariner 1 by Conor McFeely, St. Augustine’s Old Graveyard, Palace St. dusk-dawn.

  • Commissioned by Arts Arcadia, this permanent site specific Lightwork sees shapes dissolve as others emerge as the lights interact with the change of the seasons, provoking consideration of the sites current sculptural presence.

Irish Sea and Landscapes by Rozalia Regerne Soros, Alley Arts and Conference Centre, Strabane.

  • Inspired by Irish land, seascapes and built environment, working in oil-based paint using knife technique, Rozalia’s work encourages us to stop, notice and appreciate.

Drawing with sound at Void Gallery, Waterloo Place. 6.30pm-8pm.

  • A sound and drawing workshop inspired by the Turkish artist Cevdet Erek, led by Zoe McSparron. The gallery floor becomes a giant sketchpad for experiments in translating sound to drawing, encouraging us to listen closely to the sounds that we hear and create our own visions from it.

Revival - An evening of cross-cultural performances, The Old Fire Station, Hawkin St. 8pm-9pm.

  • Built in 1891, the Old Fiestation is the only surviving late C19 station in NI. Join New Gate Arts for an evening of performances as they revive and repurpose this historic building as their temporary new home.

Encore Performing Arts Academy and Encore Theatre Production, Alley Theatre, 8pm-9pm.

  • A selection of songs from Encore’s upcoming productions of Shrek the Musical and Leading Ladies Concerts.

Knitting on the Walls, between Castle gate and the Verbal Arts centre. 5.30pm-9pm.

  • Designer, Edel MacBride brings ancestral legacy and modern knitting practice together with the growth of slow clothing awareness in a unique and inspirational knitting demonstration on the Derry Walls.

Circus Workshop, In Your Space Circus, Waterloo St. 6.30pm-8.30pm.

  • Fancy running away with the circus? Make dreams a reality with In Your Space Circus skills workshops- learn to juggle, throw a diabolo, or spin some poi!

Culture Night Poetry Trail as part of the Bluebell Arts Festival.

  • Local poets will perform work along the trail, audiences can join at any time. Waterside Library 4pm, Ebrington Square 4.30pm, Little Acorns Bookstore 5.15pm, Guildhall steps 5.45pm, Void Gallery 6.15pm, City Walls Magazine St 7p., Gasyard Centre 7.30pm

History Tour of Boomhall, 7pm-8pm

  • Enjoy a historical tour of Boomhall, the people who lived there and its importance in Derry history.

Museum of Free Derry 5pm-7pm.

  • Free access to the award-winning Museum of Free Derry, telling the story of Derry's role in the civil rights movement and fight for justice.

Shirts, Singers and Sewing, The Fashion and Textile Design centre, Shipquay St 7-10pm.

  • Delve into the history of the shirt factories, this exhibition celebrates the workers and importance of the shirt factories in Derry history and culture.
