Derry community fundraising to support Aaron Doherty's family following teen's tragic death

A local community has rallied round the family of a school boy who died last week by launching a fundraising campaign.

Aaron Doherty died following heart failure at Altnagelvin Hospital in Derry, his family said.

The 17-year-old had previously tested positive for coronavirus but his father Jim Doherty told the BBC he was Covid-negative at the time of his death and that he didn't want his son to become 'a statistic of Covid-19'.

The Department of Health includes anyone who had died within 28 days of receiving a positive test for Covid-19 as a coronavirus-related death.

Paying tribute to Aaron, Mr Doherty said "he was just the happiest child you could ever have met".

"He was a really bad colour and we phoned the out-of-hours service and the doctor phoned us back," he said.

"When we described Aaron's symptoms, the doctor told us to ring an ambulance straight away."

"The ambulance arrived and the staff worked with him," Mr Doherty added.

"He was wheeled into the back of the ambulance and I said 'I'll see you later' and he waved back. That was the last time I saw him alive."

Fund organiser Stephen Porter set out to raise £500 for the family. However, more than 50 people have donated so far - raising over £1,000.

A statement on the GoFundMe Page, said: "Raising some funds for Aaron's family in an act of solidarity on behalf of the people of Derry."

Tributes have poured in for the young Derry teen following his tragic death, who was a huge fan of Derry City and Celtic FC.

Ballymoor FC, where Aaron previously played, said they were sad to hear news of his passing.

The teenager's funeral took place on October 30 following a service at St Columba’s Church, Long Tower.
