Derry City sign former Liverpool youth player ahead of restart

Derry City have announced the signing of former Liverpool youth player Adam Hammill.

Hammill has linked up the Brandywell club until the end of the League of Ireland season.

The former England Under 21 international joins from Scunthorpe United after a recent spell on loan at Stockport County.

Hamill spent his youth career at Liverpool and it was from the Merseyside club that he met up with his current manager at the Brandywell, Declan Devine.

Hammill arrived at Dunfermline on loan in 2007 when Devine and Republic of Ireland manager Stephen Kenny were in charge at the club.

"I've known Adam for a long time and he's a quality player who has had a wonderful career," Devine told the club's website.

"He's been here a few days now and already helping to bring out the best in others around him.

"I'm delighted he's at this club and I know that even though they can't be in the stadium yet, our supporters will really enjoy watching him."

Hammill was Barnsley's playoff final hero in 2016 as the Reds beat Millwall 3-1 as he scored a spectacular strike and was named man of the match.

He then went on to play under Coleraine manager Oran Kearney while at St Mirren in 2018 as the Buddies completed a remarkable escape from relegation.

The former England Under-21 international also had spells with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Huddersfield Town.

Derry City restart their league campaign against Sligo Rovers next Friday night where Hammill could make his debut.
