Derry City sign experienced former England U-21 winger Adam Hammill

Derry City believe they have pulled off a coup by signing well-travelled English winger Adam Hammill.

The 32-year-old has moved to the Candystripes ahead of next Friday’s League of Ireland transfer deadline and return to play.

And it’s the second time that Derry boss Declan Devine will have worked with Hammill as he joined Dunfermline on loan in 2007 when Stephen Kenny and Devine were in charge.

Hammill began his professional career at Liverpool before successful stints at Barnsley, Wolves, Huddersfield, St Mirren and Scunthorpe United.

A former England Under-21 international, he also had loan spells with Stockport, Rotherham, Middlesbrough and Southampton.

Devine said: “I’ve known Adam for a long time and he’s a quality player who has had a wonderful career.

“He’s the type of player we wouldn’t have been able to bring to this league had it not been for the pandemic affecting the leagues in England.

“He’s been here a few days now and is already helping to bring out the best in others around him.”

Devine continued: “I’m delighted he’s at this club and I know that even though they can’t be in the stadium yet, our supporters will really enjoy watching him.”
