Derry City say clash with Shamrock Rovers won't go ahead due to Covid-19 cases in camp

Derry City have said that their Premier Division clash with Shamrock Rovers scheduled for Wednesday evening will not go ahead due to two positive Covid-19 cases in the Candystripes' camp.

Derry released a statement tonight advising that the game was off after one squad member and one member of the backroom team tested positive for coronavirus in recent days.

Rovers, who were due to be awarded the league trophy after the game in Tallaght that was scheduled to be broadcast live by RTE, are awaiting confirmation of the situation.

In response, the FAI have stated that it is "now awaiting further information from Derry City and the Northern Ireland Public Health Agency as it reviews this situation."

Only last week League chiefs insisted that there would be no more Covid-related postponements after three Shamrock Rovers league games were pushed back due to Jack Byrne and Aaron Greene testing positive.

St Pat’s, Galway United, Wexford and Rovers all had matches called off because of confirmed cases.

Derry are facing forfeiting the game 3-0 but the Hoops will be disappointed if their plans to lift the trophy for the first time in nine years are put on hold.

Further, Derry are due to play Sligo Rovers in the quarter-finals of the FAI Cup on Sunday.
