Derry City's Brandywell to feature in new TG4 series exploring famous stadiums around the world

Derry City's Ryan McBride Brandywell Stadium will feature in a brand new TG4 series that celebrates the world’s great sporting arenas at home and abroad.

During the three hour-long programmes, former Kerry footballer Dara Ó Cinnéide will visit stadiums across the world and explore the culture, history, architecture and design in more than a dozen stadiums.

He will travel to venues in Mexico, China, Korea, Croatia, Portugal, Wales and England.

In episode one, which airs on Thursday March 23 at 9.30pm, the lifelong Liverpool fan will visit Anfield, where he will learn that the name of the world famous stadium was inspired by a small townland in Wexford called Baile na hAbhann.

Then it’s off to Braga in Portugal, where architect Eduardo Souta De Moura designed a stadium for Euro 2004, which was carved out of a cliff.

In Korea, Ó Cinnéide gets a tour of Jeonju’s maritime-inspired ground, which hosted three matches during the 2002 World Cup.

And finally it’s off to Derry’s famous Brandywell, where he experiences the ways in which sport embodies bonds of identity and history for the local community.

In later episodes, Ó Cinnéide visits the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, famous for Brazil’s 1970 World Cup win and Diego Maradona’s two goals against England.

He also takes in Tottenham’s new stadium, Croke Park, Wrexham’s Racecourse and Fitzgerald Stadium in Killarney.
