Derry City FC pay tribute to John Hume following death of former SDLP leader and club president

Derry City have paid tribute to former club president John Hume following his death aged 83.

The civil rights activist, Nobel Peace Prize winner and former SDLP leader was an avid Candystripes fan and held the role of club president for 21 years.

A minute's silence too honour Hume will be observed at the SSE Airtricity League Premier Division clash between St Pat's and Derry at Richmond Park this evening.

A club statement read: "As well as being an iconic figure on the political stage, John was a wonderful ambassador for the city and the club.

"He has been President for the past 21 years and testimony to his global popularity was instrumental in bringing a star-studded Barcelona side to Derry in 2003.

"He was a genuine supporter too and attended as many games as he could. John travelled to all the club’s cup finals during his tenure and as a club and a city, we were lucky to have him.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to John’s wife, Pat, and the entire family circle at this very difficult time. May his gentle soul Rest In Peace."

The FAI also paid tribute, tweeting: "The FAI would like to send its condolences to the family & friends of John Hume A fantastic supporter of @derrycityfc & our domestic game, John will be greatly missed."
