Derry City boss Declan Devine not interested in European talk yet

Though Derry City squeezed above Bohemians into third place in the Premier Division table after Friday’s 3-1 win at UCD, boss Declan Devine won’t hear talk of Europe.

The Candystripes’ focus for now is getting to the season’s first cup final.

The holders go in as warm favourites as they host Waterford in the first semi-final of the EA Sports Cup at the Brandywell tonight.

It’s a competition very much dear to Derry hearts as they look to retain a trophy they’ve won a record 11-times.

“It’s very early days to be talking about European places because there are too many good teams in the mix,” said Devine.

“What I’ve found over my time in this league is that in the fourth phase of games there will always be surprises.

“There will always be teams who have an expectation on them to win who will drop points.

“So we’ll be the way we have been all year. Take each game as it comes.

“We’ll make sure we prepare properly for every game and we have to understand that you get nothing without hard work and that’s the way we’ll be going until the end of the season.”
