Derry City announce signing of former Portadown youngster Gerard Storey

Derry City have announced the signing of former Portadown youngster Gerard Storey.

The 19-year-old has joined Derry after playing against the Candystripes in Monday's friendly against Cliftonville.

Storey left Portsmouth earlier this year following two years with the club.

During that time he also had loan spells with Gosport Borough in the Southern Area League before returning to Northern Ireland in January to join Carrick Rangers.

Storey had been assessing his options this summer but has now made the move to the League of Ireland.

Derry City currently sit fifth in the Premier Division in what is manager Ruaidhri Higgins first season in charge.

The club announced Storey's signing on their Twitter account on Saturday.

"Ruaidhri Higgins has added to his squad this weekend by bringing in 19-year old midfielder Gerard Storey," the Candystripes said.

"The Belfast-born teenager had spent the last couple of seasons with League 1 side Portsmouth but played against City in this week's friendly with Cliftonville."

Higgins told the club website: "I've seen him a few times and as well as being a very good player he is the type of person we want at the club.

" He has signed until the end of 2022 and he has the potential to do very well for Derry City."
